It’s that time of year again when we are preparing for a new year of catechesis. We are generating class lists, parent letters, lesson plans, and ice breakers. Because of the emphasis of digital catechesis many catechists are looking for ways to reach students with technology. If you’re looking for a way to incorporate digital media into your catechesis then why not create a class blog!
What is a class blog?
The word blog is a contraction of web log. Class blogs are websites that provide information, dialogue, and sharing what has been created by students in the classroom. You may post whatever you deem worthy, but posting basic information is a good place to start. Parents and students appreciate knowing there is one place to go for class specific announcements and details such as the class schedule and special events. Along with the blog as a source of information, allowing for discussion of class topics is generally at the top of the list for many educators. Catechists may post a summary of the topic and offer a few questions for student response. Many teachers and catechists offer activities during their sessions that can be posted on the blog. This is a great way to add value to the class blog by showing off student efforts.
How are class blogs beneficial?
Class blogs are beneficial because they generate a stronger sense of community for students, families, and the parish or school community. Creating community is usually limited to being together and participating in social, educational, and service initiatives. However, in today’s world of social media students can gather online and create a stronger sense of class community.
Class blogs also expand limited in person session time to asynchronous communication. Students review information and post responses whenever they like! Parents and family members appreciate the opportunity to review what has been happening in class and contributing feedback or sharing with others. Finally, the parish or school is strengthened by the occasion to review class content.
What about safety?
The safety of our children is number one. Private class blogs are the safest because of having to login to access. Class blogs should allow for adult moderation, post approval and the use of pseudonyms.

There are many ways to create a class blog but WordPress.com and Kidblog.com offer free sites and easy set up for blogs. Kidblog.com offers password-protected sites for additional child safety. Teachers, Parents, and Students can easily be added as members of the class blog and login with passwords. Al of your information, conversation, and most importantly identity are safe.
